What Is Your Success Buying You?

Authority should give you more choice over your work, time, and life.

Someone can earn far more than they did 10 years ago and still feel unable to take a Wednesday afternoon off.

Someone else can run their own business and still say yes to every client because next month's revenue feels uncertain.

Income and choice do not always grow at the same rate.

Money matters. It gives us security, comfort, options, and the ability to take care of people we love. As a career or business grows, I think one more measure becomes useful:

How much choice is this success creating?

In 2012, burnout put me in the hospital for two weeks. When I came home, I added another measure to success: I still wanted to earn well and do serious work, and I wanted enough flexibility to be present for my family.

That became part of how I defined success for the solopreneur path that followed.

The 4-Part Success Matrix is a simple way to define career flexibility across four areas: money, time, work, and life. The full matrix appears later in this article, with one question for each area.

Success can grow faster than choice

A senior executive may earn well and still have very little say over the week. Meetings appear because somebody else needs them. Travel happens because the role demands it. The next promotion brings more money and another layer of responsibility.

A consultant can face a different version of the same problem. The calendar belongs to them, but every enquiry feels too risky to refuse.

Career flexibility means having enough choice to shape the work you take, how you use your time, and how work fits around the rest of your life.

A 2026 meta-analysis of 113 studies found that flexible working arrangements were associated with greater job autonomy, life satisfaction, and better work-family outcomes.

The useful part is deciding what you want before another promotion, client, project, or business opportunity decides it for you.

Authority can increase your options

Authority can change the number and quality of opportunities that reach you.

When the market recognizes more of the authority you have already earned, you have a better chance of receiving several good opportunities instead of depending on one.

You can ask whether a client fits and price your work with more confidence. You can also turn down work you no longer enjoy or choose a project simply because you want to do it.

If the evidence behind your expertise is scattered across years of work, building a Proof Bank from the proof you have already earned can make that expertise easier for the right person to trust.

More good options give you more say over what happens next.

Work flexibility shows up in the choices you can make about what belongs on your calendar, what work you accept, and what you can comfortably refuse.

The 4-Part Success Matrix

I would look at success through four areas.

4-Part Success Matrix showing money, time, work, and life as four areas where success can create more choice.

Money

What do you want your income to make possible?

There may be a number you want to reach. You may want to invest, buy a home, support your parents, travel more, or simply reach a point where money no longer controls every decision.

Write down what "better" means to you.

Time

How much say do you want over your week?

Maybe you want mornings free for exercise. Perhaps you want to take your children somewhere without checking three calendars first. You may want the freedom to travel, learn, or keep one afternoon empty because you like having one afternoon empty.

Time has value because you cannot earn it again later.

Work

What do you want to spend your working hours doing?

After years of experience, you probably know which problems still interest you and which ones drain you.

You may want fewer clients and deeper work. You may want to advise instead of operate. You may want to write, teach, speak, build, consult, or combine several kinds of work.

If you are thinking beyond your current role, your past experience can support a different professional direction without forcing you to start from zero.

Life

What should work leave room for?

For me, family is part of that answer.

For you it could be health, travel, friends, learning, community work, hobbies, or time with no planned purpose at all.

Work takes up a large part of life. You get to decide how much room you want it to leave for everything else.

Use the matrix before the next yes

Take a page and divide it into four parts:

Money. Time. Work. Life.

Under each one, write what you want more of over the next few years.

Then take the next big opportunity you are considering: a promotion, a new client, a partnership, a new business, or a larger contract.

Ask:

If I say yes, what gets better?

You may decide the money alone makes the opportunity worth taking. That can be a perfectly good decision.

Another opportunity may pay about the same but give you much more control over your time. One may move you toward work you want to be doing five years from now. Another may make family life easier.

The matrix gives you a way to compare the opportunity with the life you want.

You can spend years getting better at a version of success that keeps taking you somewhere you never chose.

I would rather know what I want the success to buy.

I want success to give me enough income and enough choice to have more say over how I work and live.

Authority is useful when it gives you more say over your work and your life.

See you next Saturday,

Shiv
